Micro Finance

CREATING INCOME STREAMS AND LIVELIHOODS

Project Impact $60,000

Enabling the poorest of the poor to create and grow small businesses so they can build a financially sustainable future.

The poorest communities in Africa are not the problem. They are not victims. They are not desperate people in need of a hand out. They are a vibrant community with the potential to end their own hunger and poverty.

These people can be the agents of change and we can support the change process and create space for innovation.

Through your donation, a woman in Africa will able to build a financially stable future, feed her children, grow her independence, build up her pride and end the cycle of hunger and poverty for her and her family for generations to come.

This is not an imaginary situation. In 2016 this was the story of 35,797 people. This is the power $60 can have through The Hunger Project’s micro finance program. By choosing to support this project you are becoming a partner and an investor. You are choosing to believe in the tenacity of the human spirit and see the people of Africa not as mouths to feed but as sources of power to end their own hunger and poverty.

$60,000 over 3 years could:

  • Help 500 borrowers in rural villages in Africa with a start-up micro finance loan to start or grow their small businesses and income generating activities
  • Train 250 local volunteer leaders in Africa to teach their fellow community members about planning and building profitable local businesses, so they can earn an income and feed their families

THE ISSUE:

Women farmers produce more than half of the food grown in the world and 1.6 billion women depend on agriculture for their livelihoods; however, they are systematically denied access to land, education and credit to be productive and successful, and to feed their families.

THE HUNGER PROJECT’S WORK:

To provide critical access to micro finance loans and financial literacy via education and training focused on women. The Hunger Project’s Micro Finance Program is women-led, locally owned and fully integrated, to create an empowering and supportive environment for women farmers, business owners and entrepreneurs to flourish.

YOUR IMPACT:

We measure:

Active borrowers in rural villages in Africa who take out a micro finance loan to start or grow their small businesses and income generating activities

For example, $60 is the approx. cost of a start-up micro finance loan for a woman in Africa.

Women and men trained in financial literacy and business skills to create viable and sustainable businesses

For example, $120 could train one local volunteer leader in Africa to teach and train their fellow community members in planning and building profitable local businesses, so they can earn an income and feed their families.
